The show Yul Brynner made famous (or is it the other way around?). Set in Bangkok, Siam around 1862, the story follows the original autobiographical account of Anna Leonowens from England, summoned by King Mongkut as a tutor to his many children and wives. With a reputation abroad as a barbarian, the king also seeks assistance in changing his image and his ways. Each keeps a firm grip on personal traditions and values, but despite cultural differences, each finds similarities which bind them in a unique love story. Many of the songs you'll recognize! Whistle A Happy Tune, Getting To Know You, Hello, Young Lovers, Shall We Dance and the most beautiful Something Wonderful are among R&H's finest creations. The music will be provided by two of Nanaimo finest pianists, Rie Okamura and Sharon Wolzein, each with her own grand piano on stage, along with Michael Wright on percussion. The exotic location and the fascinating yet ultimately uplifting tale makes for one of the all-time marvels of the stage. Oh! And the ballet - Small House of Uncle Thomas - is truly a Jerome Robbins' delight! For more information, phone 250-758-5107 |
